Security FeaturesSiteWriter sites can be either closed or open: ClosedCommercial sites are usually completely close - editable only by the site's administrator(s). To everyone else it looks like any other web site. But more up to date. OpenIf your site represents a community or collaborative project, you may opt for an 'open' site where anyone can edit pages - friend or foe. Whilst this may seem risky, in practice it usually works well. Ajar? The administrator has the ability to lock individual pages. A site could be 'mostly open', with a few key pages locked. Or mostly locked with a few collaborative pages. You can also limit the actions available to non-administrators. Security MeasuresDepending on the site type you choose, your SiteWriter site may be more or less prone to 'vandalism'. However, even 'wide open' sites are generally free from trouble for the following reasons: Revision HistoryEvery time a page is changed, SiteWriter takes a backup of the original. It keeps a number of backups for a set time period and can display any previous version of any page at any time from its memory. This means you can go back to a previous version if you mess up whilst editing. It also means that, unlike in the real world, vandalism is as easy to remove as it is to add. As a result sites tend to be largely self-policing (click Page History now to view the changes that have been made to this page). Email NotificationIn addition to keeping copies of revised pages, SiteWriter sends a notification email to the adminstrator(s) whenever a new page is created or an existing page is changed. This allows the administrator to monitor undesirable amendments, accidental or otherwise. Last updated: August 16, 2002.
